Many people still don’t know their “Rights”, a basic outline of your Rights are mentioned below; due to the ongoing changes in the law these can be subject to changes and amendments.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!
Your Rights are protected by the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984

Stop & Search
• Under Section 1, the police must have a good reason for stopping you.
• ASK them why they have stopped you and ask them to write the reasons down in their police note books and to show it to you.
• DO NOT sign their note books.
• ASK the police if you are under arrest.

Under Arrest
• If you are under arrest under Sections 24 and 25 the police MUST have a good reason for arresting you.
• ASK the reason for your arrest and ask them to write it down in their notebooks and to show it to you.
• DO NOT sign their notebooks.

At the Police Station
• GIVE the police your correct name, address and date of birth
• ASK the custody sergeant to allow you to speak to a solicitor of your OWN CHOICE under Section 58.
• DO NOT answer any further questions and DO NOT sign anything until you have spoken to MTG Solicitors.
